Why Communication Design?
Communication design is about crafting a marketing tool that connects a business with prospective clients. That marketing tool could be a business card, a brochure or a website – I specialize in websites because I love technology. I work with partners who focus on books, videos, podcasts, presentations, and other marketing tools.
How I became a Communications Designer with three specializations
My initial training was in graphic design. But when I joined an advertising agency (BBDO), they discovered I could write. As a junior copywriter I was given the strategy by experts.
I realized that the copy (the words), the ad concept (the visuals) and the underlying sales message (the strategy) really can’t really be separated.
“Pick a lane” said BBDO, you have to specialize – that’s how it is. But I just couldn’t decide.
So I went back to university and did a degree in communication, consumer and social psychology and business management.
It turns out you DON’T have to be good at just one thing, if you just work hard enough!
With my new combined skills, I went on to work in a different communications field – magazine publishing. Within three years, I was appointed managing editor of a technical engineering journal – at 26 I was responsible for the ad sales team, magazine
strategy, content writers, designers, print and distribution logistics.
Then I was headhunted into the corporate world of unlimited budgets. They loved having a generalist, and I loved being one. I picked up a bit of experience with photography, video, and radio, and trade shows, and investor relations.
My employer was a global player in industrial engineering. I reported on projects where they built mine infrastructure in Australia, high-rises in London, an oil platform off Angola, roads and bridges across Africa, over 10 sports stadiums, and
the iconic Burj al Arab in Dubai.
My employer was also an early adopter of internet and intranet technologies. I had been a tech geek since my teens, so I jumped from marketing to IT. I worked with over 300 industrial subsidiaries helping them to leverage web technology for new business development.
That’s how I got to opportunity to work with multiple sectors. I learned from subject matter experts about concrete and masonry, construction project management, crane hire and manufacturing high-speed trains.
I pivoted from employee to subcontractor, then to owning my own agency. While delivering web marketing projects, I went back to university in 2011, to formalize my tech experience, and completed a BSc in Computer Science and User Experience.
And then I moved to Canada, and started building my business all over again.
So… that’s my story.
That’s how I became hands-on with strategy, technical writing, layout design and website development.
